3 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF
4 THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA,
5 SUPPORTING THE INCLUSION OF GALAXY
6 SCHOOL RECONSTRUCTION IN THE FISCAL YEAR
7 2011 CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT BUDGET FOR THE
8 PALM BEACH COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

II WHEREAS, in December 2007, the School Board of Palm Beach County voted to
12 close Galaxy School in favor of redistributing students to other schools and to re-construct a
13 K-8 school on the campus of the old Atlantic High School; and
14 WHEREAS, the City of Boynton Beach and the Community strongly objected to
15 this proposal; and
16 WHEREAS, Galaxy School is an important neighborhood-based school that has
17 served Boynton Beach for over forty years at this location; and
18 WHEREAS, in February, 2008, the City of Boynton Beach proposed a land swap of
19 a 3.78 acre parcel immediately east of the school. The land swap allows the reconstruction
20 of Galaxy School on-site and moves the new school away from 1-95, thereby saving the
21 District relocation costs and provides for a school further away from an Interstate Highway;
22 and
23 WHEREAS, the School District of Palm Beach County accepted this proposal from
24 the City of Boynton Beach which includes cost-sharing of construction elements by the City
25 of Boynton Beach; and
26 WHEREAS, in 2009 and 2010, the City of Boynton Beach completed all necessary
2 inter-local agreements with the School District and Palm Beach County in anticipation of the
28 land swap and construction of Galaxy School commencing in 201 I; and
2 WHEREAS, the City of Boynton Beach and the Boynton Beach community
3 believes the School Board of Palm Beach County should include this reconstruction of
31 Galaxy School in the 201 I capital improvement construction plan as previously approved by
3 the Palm Beach County School Board. This represents fulfillment of a commitment by the
33 School District to the Boynton Beach community.
3 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
3 THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA THAT:

I Section 1. The foregoing "Whereas" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as
2 being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption
3 hereof
4 Section 2. The City of Boynton Beach supports the inclusion of Galaxy School
S Reconstruction in the fiscal year 201 I Capital Improvement Budget for the Palm Beach
6 County School District which represents fulfillment of a commitment by the School District
7 to the Boynton Beach community.
8 Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon passage
