Senise Saint-Fleur-----Cite Solei! Haiti
My name is Senise Saint-Fleur and I am nine years old. My Dad's name
is Bolian Saint-Fleur and my Mom's name is Guerline Apolon. We live in Cite
Soleil Haiti. Life is not easy for us here. My parents have no jobs. But I have
happiness of knowing my Mom and my Dad. I know they love me. I watch life
being hard for them. Every day when we wake up we talk to the people in our
neighborhood. Sometimes my Mom makes breakfast and we have coffee or
soup with bread, especially when she has sugar, charcoal or water. Usually I
pray and go to school without taking mealtime. Life for my family is just
waking up in the morning and sleep at night. But sometimes in the evening I
just play with my friends in the neighborhood. I forget the problems I see in
day. Then I pray and go to sleep. I sleep with my sister on the floor.
Sometimes we fight in blackout. No on at home has personal things.
Everything is sharing.
My parents' financial situation make it impossible for us to eat twice a
day. Usually my Mom cooks only in the afternoon. When we have no food in
our home, people in neighborhood share their food with us. And when we
have some rice or beans or corn meal we share what we have with them. Yes,
I often feel sad and hopeless; I hear my Father keep complaining about life.
My Mom always says that life will be like rust if jobs don't come for people to
do in this country. I don't have memories of my birthday anniversaries. I have
not received gifts or money from people. I have only one dress that I keep
wearing unless my Mom gets some money at Christmas time. My Dad is
handicapped and Mom has a chronic stomachache. I used to feel ill a lot also.
My Mom and Dad have lived here as long as I can remember. I like my
friends, my Church and my school in Cite Solei!. My happiest memories are
when we have food to eat and to share. I feel happy when I am going to
school and see myself among my friends. I like to play with a doll and to
jump cord. I enjoy singing, too. I have learned many songs in Church and at
school. We sing so much. I like to help my Mom. I help her to wash the
dishes. I help her do laundry. I carry water for her when she cooks and I crack
spices too. It is my job to watch over my little brother and sister when my
Mom is not home.

I am scared when there is shooting and violent crimes. I would like to see our
neighborhood cleaned up. There is too much trash. No one comes to take it
away. We know that the water is not safe to drink, but my Dad puts chlorine
in it for us. Our food and water are often dirty. But there is no choice. We eat
what we have. I like cookies most. I don't know what can be done to improve
the life of people living in Cite SoleiL No one I know has an answer.
My dream for the future is to be something in the society and to have a
job so I can take care of myself and my family. I believe I can not reach my
goal without an education. But going to school is not easy. My Mom often
needs me at home.
What I would like to share with other youth is how important school is
to me. Don't ever, never give up. I believe education is the key to open doors.
I have heard my uncle say this. What does that mean J once asked him? He
said education can change life. I wish one day to see my life changes. I dream
to be a nurse.
I know the world can be better if people love God----Iove each other,
help each other, care about each other and share with each other. I would like
people to treat me kindly like a human being. Show me love and affection,
give me clothes, food, shoes and cookies when I want or need them. Yes, I
eat when I find, not when I want. I also would like people to think about me.

My name is Almeida Ramage and I am eight years old. I am hoping
to be a student at Ecole Aide Aux Enfants this coming year. I live only a
half mile from the school in Cite SOleil, so I could easily walk there every
day. There is no other school near to my home. I live with my mother,
three brothers and one sister in a one room concrete home with a tin roof.
I am happiest when I am playing hide and seek and catch with my friends. I
also love to play soccer. My happiest memories are of my mother singing
and playing with me. My father is not with us and I don't know where he is,
so my mother must work hard. She sells clorox in small cups and also
soap. She sells these things in the street. When she is working, my Auntie
Yanick BazHe takes care of us, and I help, too. I mop the floor and take
care of the babies.
Living in Cite Soleil is not easy. We have no running water or
plumbing. A truck comes three times each week and we filt buckets and
containers with the water from this truck. We never have enough of the
water or food we need. I often feet sad because I have too many
memories of loud noises and shouting. It makes me so scared. I have
heard gun shots and I didn't know what was happening. I was just scared.
That is the worst for me here. I don't feel safe. You asked me about
celebrations I have participated in, but I don't know any. I don't know when
my birthday is and I have no toys or personal possessions.
I remember when the hurricanes came last year. So much water
came into my house, but we stayed there; we had no where else to go.
We just stayed together. Everything was wet, and I didn't know what would
happen next, but I was not alone.
I like school very much. I like school because this is where I learn
how to read and write. I learn songs at school, too. I really like to draw
and color pictures on paper. Some day, I would like to become a teacher
to give others the joy of being able too write and read books.
There is alot of shouting and loud noise here in Cite SOleil, and I am
so afraid of that. It is bad for me when I hear it. I am a peaceful boy, but I
feel little peace here. You ask me how you could help, and the best thing
anyone could do for me would be to help my mom to pay her rent. That
would be the best present ever.

I Who are we?
I The Children's Project For Haiti is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2008.
We are composed of a Board of Directors and a group of Advisors who
have served the Haitian community as teachers and counselors in Palm
Beach County for well over a decade. We are an interfaith group who
have joined hands to put our faith to action.
What is our Mission?
Our Mission is to support education, health and vocational projects for
children in Haiti. We know that by empowering children through education
and vocational training and enlisting the support of their communities in
the process, we can help build self-sufficient individuals and help fight the
effects of poverty and violence.
What is our history?
Ecole Mixte Aide Aux Enfants de la Cite Soleil is a kindergarten through
eighth grade school located in Cite Soleil (an area of Port au Prince). Cite
Soleil was once considered to be the worst slum in the northern
hemisphere. Before the January 12, 2010 earthquake it was inhabited by
approximately 400,000 residents living in an area of eight square miles.
I here are no sewers, few stores and little to no electricity. 12,000 U.N.
~roops patrol the streets of Cite Soleil and Port au Prince due to the effects
Ff civil strife and oppression.
~astor Guerrier founded the school in 1988. He served as a Director and

jfeacher of the school which served up to 100 students each year. In 1993,
Pastor Guerrier left Haiti to join his wife in the U.S. The school was left to a
group of community leaders. A pastor and teacher took on the
responsibility of continuing to run the school. The building serves as a
school, church and community meeting house. Over time, however, the
$chool deteriorated due to lack of funds. In 2008 it was preparing to close

Community Language Facilitator. In 2008 were able to raise enough
money through private donations to hire local community members to
make building repairs, construct new furniture, purchase new books and
school supplies and hire new teachers. We initially reopened the school
with one teacher and 20 students. This year we have had to cap
enrollment at 50 students which maximizes our current budget.
Current Projects
We recently hired community members to construct new latrines since the
old ones could no longer be used. In addition, a new water tank was
installed, so that our students and their families have access to clean
water. We are currently researching the purchase of a building which is
adjacent to our school. When we have a location to store food, cook food
and serve meals, we will be eligible for food aid from such organizations
such as Food For The Poor. Our goal is to create a Feeding Center next
door to the school so that each student starts the school day with a hot
meal. We know that students can not learn well if they are feeling the
effects of hunger.
In addition, Annette has written a book and Teacher's Manual for Ecole
Mixte Aide Aux Enfants, Reading Critically Through Stories Of Haiti. The
student book and Teacher's Manual are being translated into Haitian
Creole, published and marketed by EducaVision in Coconut Creek, FI. The
book was written to expose our teachers and students in Haiti to a fresh
approach to teaching and learning which focuses on Critical Thinking and
interactive learning. Reading Critically Through Stories Of Haiti will be
used for teacher training at our school. We also plan to organize training
at additional sites in Haiti.
Costs
*Books and Supplies- $35. per student per year *Uniforms-$15. per child

*Monthly Teacher Salaries-$250 (for 2 teachers and an Outreach Worker)
*Feeding Center-$4,OOO. for the cost of the building
* Approximately $4,500 for building improvements
* Administrative Costs/Supplies-$400. per year
Closing Statement
It is an honor for us to work together In this Interfaith group; We
learn so much about the human spirit from each other. We consider
our work with The Children's Project For Haiti to be an effort of love.
We know that no act of love of kindness Is too small. We also believe
in the Importance of education. We know that It opens one's mind to
limitless possibilities. We believe that each and every human being
deserves food for the body, education and culture for the mind, and
dignity, equality and freedom for the spirit.
