The Board (Committee) may only conduct public business after a quorum has been established. SISTER CITIES OF DELRAY BEACH YOUTH EXCHANGE MIYAZU, JAPAN SUMMER 2012 What is the Student Exchange Program The student exchange program is a 2 -year volunteer service commitment with Delray Beach Sister Cities, Inc. • 10- months of cultural orientation • 8 -day summer trip to Miyazu, Japan (includes home stay, school visits, goodwill diplomacy and a tour of Kyoto City). • A group presentation tour to local schools and community organizations. Who Can Be an Exchange Student Qualified applicants for the program meet certain criteria. • 9` -10 grader when applying • Resident or student in Delray Beach • Have submitted a complete application packet, including a separate evaluation from your current teachers. • No dietary restrictions • Physically and medically fit for international travel • Available to attend weekly orientation sessions • Available to participate in a local presentation tour during the school year following the Japan trip • Willing to host a student from Japan While many may apply, only a few students are chosen for the program. An interview committee will select 5 -7 applicants to be exchange students. This is a cultural exchange. The program seeks students who are able to function and interact comfortably in an international setting as well- mannered representatives of the City of Delray Beach. Students can expect to be exposed to foreign cultural situations where accommodations, customs, religious beliefs and eating habits will be different. Those with special physical or dietary needs and limitations should consider this before applying. Failure to disclose special physical or dietary needs can lead to disqualification from participation. What Happens after Applications Are Submitted An interview committee will review completed applications. Qualified applicants and their parent(s) will be invited to attend a welcome reception at a time and placed to be announced. The interview committee will select 10 -15 candidates to be interviewed at a later date. The committee will choose exchange students from the candidates. STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM (Notes from meeting with Tony Durante, Delray Beach Sister Cities, 10/21/11) Delray takes a maximum of 7 youth who will stay with 7 host families for 3 days. The host city provides transportation. Each youth will shadow his /her student host. They travel in June. 10 & 11 graders are eligible. Each student is expected to make presentation at school and in the community after they return from their trip. Community service hours are earned for the entire process (orientation and trip). They recommend "uniforms" — i.e. polo shirts and khakis. They have their youth design the logo 1. Applications Selection committee — 2 or 3 from country of sister city, from local schools Interviews at an applicant's reception (with parents) 2. Orientation — Needs to be done by someone who knows both the language and the culture and who will go on the trip with the students.
