R14 -101 2 4 I A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF 5 BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA SUPPORTING A REFERENDUM 6 PLACED ON THE NOVEMBER 4, 2014 BALLOT BY THE 7 SCHOOL BOARD OF PALM BEACH COUNTY TO CONTINUE AN AD VALOREM LEVY FOR SCHOOL OPERATIONAL 9 NEEDS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. 1(1 j 111 121 WHEREAS, the School District has placed a Referendum on the November 4, 2014 13 Ballot for the continuation of an existing 0.25 mill levy that funds more than 500 Fine Arts, 14 Physical Education and Choice /Magnet teachers in District - operated schools; and 11 1 WHEREAS, all funds collected from the levy will be overseen by an independent 1 oversight committee of citizens and experts that will monitor the money collected that that it is 1 spent for the designated purpose such as funding teachers as well as arts, music, physical 1 education, career and academic programs for the fiscal years July 1, 2015 and ending June 30, 2 2019; and 21 2 WHEREAS, voter approval is required to maintain this revenue source, which 2 generates approximately $36 million annually to support operational needs of District - operated 21 schools. 2 20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF 21 THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: 2: 2 • Section 1. The foregoing "Whereas" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as 31 being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption 3 hereof. 34 3 Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach, Florida hereby 34 supports the referendum to continue an ad valorem levy for school operational needs. 3', 3: Section 3. Prainito, MMC 31 "ityd:,. 31 G‘T °A. 3 33 34 a �, 31 3 y.or.' - e. ,� 1 3. . aN 2 ! i I SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY CONTINUATION OF .25 MILL - REFERENDUM FACT SHEET • The School District has placed a Referendum on the November 4, 2014 Ballot for continuation of an existing 0.25 mill tax levy that funds more than 500 fine arts, PE and Choice /Magnet teachers in non - charter District schools. • If approved, this levy will impact more than 90,000 students in over 120 non - charter District schools. • A property owner in Palm Beach County will continue to pay $25 dollars for each $100,000 of assessed value. Residents with a homestead exemption will pay even less. • All funds collected from the tax levy will be overseen by an independent oversight committee of citizens and experts. They will monitor that the money collected will be spent properly for the designated purpose. • The tax will continue to be collected in 2015 and end in June 2019. The tax will automatically expire in four years and cannot be renewed without voter approval. • Funding per pupil in Florida is currently less than it was at the start of the 2007 -2008 school year. This reduction resulted in approximately $78 million less revenue for Palm Beach County Schools for the 2014 school year.
