R16-053 1 RESOLUTION NO. R16 -053 2 3 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, PALM 4 BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING PALM BEACH 5 COUNTY AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH 6 COUNTY'S PLAN TO ENACT A ONE -CENT SALES TAX TO PAY 7 FOR NEEDED IMPROVEMENTS TO PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE, 8 PARKS, PUBLIC SAFETY INITIATIVES AND ECONOMIC 9 DEVELOPMENT, AND TO PLACE A REFERENDUM ON THE 10 NOVEMBER 8, 2016 BALLOT FOR VOTER APPROVAL OF SUCH 11 SALES TAX; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE; AND FOR 12 OTHER PURPOSES. 13 14 WHEREAS, the establishment and maintenance of infrastructure is a core function of 15 local government; and 16 17 WHEREAS, there are many critical improvements that need to be made to 18 infrastructure in Palm Beach County and in the 38 municipalities within the County that 19 cannot be funded with existing revenue sources in the foreseeable future; and 20 21 WHEREAS, on March 22, 2016, the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach 22 County approved a plan in cooperation with the School District of Palm Beach County, and in 23 accordance with Section 212.055, Florida Statutes, to enact a one -cent sales tax to pay for 24 needed improvements to infrastructure, parks, public safety initiatives and economic 25 development; and 26 27 WHEREAS, the plan approved by the Board of County Commissioners allocated the 28 sales tax proceeds as follows: 48 percent to the School District; 27.5 percent to the County; 29 18.5 percent to the 38 municipalities within Palm Beach County; 4.5 percent to the cultural 30 institutions; and 1.5 percent to economic development. 31 32 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF 33 THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, AS 34 FOLLOWS: 35 36 Section 1. Each Whereas clause set forth above is true and correct and 37 incorporated herein by this reference. 38 39 Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach hereby supports the 40 one -cent sales tax plan that would fund important infrastructure, parks, public safety, and 41 economic development initiatives of Palm Beach County, the School District of Palm Beach 42 County, and the 38 municipalities within Palm Beach County. 43 S: \CC \WP \Resolutions\2016\R16 -053 Support One_ Penny_Sales_Tax_Plan_- _Reso.Doc 44 Section 3. The City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach hereby supports 45 coritinued efforts to place the one -cent sales tax referendum on the November 8, 2016 general 46 election ballot. 47 48 - Section 4. The Boynton Beach City Clerk is directed to distribute this Resolution to 49 the Board of County Commissioners for Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach County School 50 Board, and the Palm Beach County League of Cities, Inc. 51 52 Section 5.
