The City Clerk then read a list o~ the bills being O'Eayed for payment this evening. The ~ayor read a letter from Sol.El!is F.Altman, Director of Civil Defense of Palm Beach County~ asking that a woman be designated in Boom,on Beach 5o work under l'irs.Claude Ife~an for the purpose of registration of vom~u to be fitted into phases of Civil Defense activities to be conducted by the Red Cross~ The Nayor said the matter was urgant and that some woman should be fo~d as soon as possible for this work. Regardin~ the truc~k it ~s repor-~ed that only two bids bean received, none from the Ford dealer in Deiray Beach or from Chevrolet. had ~.~. Robi~son, representing the Dodge Company, sealed bid, explaining that they had a ~ruck ready ~ · ate dexlve ry. brought for immadi~ Mr~ Hood said he would like to have the ~atter put' off long enough for him to request bids from Ford and Chevrolet and that he womld call them up vomorrow~ Mr~ Rcs_ns on was asked to report tomorrow night at 8 o~ clock, when the. meeting would be continued, and that the matter would be settled then. The City Clerk read a report on the Court case of Wmllzam R. ~onz~son, who is applying for a reduction of his fine. ~e Mayor explained that the mau was fined ~25 for speed~ lng and .had he not appeared in Cour~ he ~,~ouid only have lost the 2mo~um._t of his fine, but he did apoear and had to pay $50. Pro~_nce, that a rebate of 225 be made to z~r~ ~ohnson~ Motion passed~ Followi~ a long discussion on insurance, :':,~r~Hood suggested calling in other insurance agents fo~ figures on the City,s policies '~oo see if reductions in premiums ss~u be obtained. Murray Day had reported 'that the response to the appeal for ~=nds for the Searborough family had been small; he said work on the house wes proceeding ~dth voluntary labor, and that at the moment three p!~mubers were needed ~ in connection with the cemetery fil!~ the ~,~ayor suggested getting in touch with the County who might be ~lling to help~out. He said he would call up Ben Sunday tomorrow and added that he would like to see the cemetery finished this year~ A discussion on road repairsfollowed~ With regard ~o complaints about Palmetto Street, the ~syor said that as the street was really passable, he thought that the roads which are ~e~an_&~ impassable should be fixed first~ Mr. Shook suggested that a certain amomut per hour should be charged against equipmenz, in order to get a true picture of the total cost of the road repair work, and also of how much money we are getting ouz of the e~uipment, Referring to the Building Inspector, the ~ayor said that ~r.Greenwood was on a straight salary and suggested he be given an increase of at least $25 e month~ making his pay $75. He congratulated )?m. Greenwood on the excellent work he was doing. Er. Shook made a mosion, ssconded by Iv~ Hood, that the salary of the City Building Inspector be increased by ~25 e month, to date from Jmnuary t, 1951~ Motion passed. ~u~ Mayor referred tc t~e City Police Department as being the lowest paid along the East coast~ He had asked the Police Chief to get the rates paid by other communities, adding that in view of the increase in taxes our City employees are really getting a decrease in pay. He said that if it wes possible he would like to see the City Employees put ~uder Civil Service. ,-'~n Griffith, asked for his opinion, requested a couple of weeks in which to study the matter further, when he v~uld draw up a statement sh~,ving whet difference would result in setting up Civil Service.: that it involves so much, would mean extra clerical help, the setting up of e merit system, etc.~ an~ that the expense to the City would probably be too much considering the small nu~nber of City employees.
