Urban and Community Forestry Grant Application
The City of Boynton Beach (population 49,026) has been involved
mn Urban Forestry since 1979, having successfully received the
National Tree City USA Award for seven consecutive years. We
are actively involved in tree planting and maintenance of major
roadways in the City. The F.E.C. railroad parallels U.S. Federal
Highway #1 and a beautification goal of the City is to provide a
visual barrier of the tracks and trains to passing motorists.
An exotic species of Australian Pine hedge has existed along
this 3,500 foot area requiring constant trimming and plant
replacement-to keep it at a maximum height of 4 feet (F.E.C.
requirement). The purpose of this grant project would be to
plant and water fifty native Red Cedar trees. The trees would
be installed outside the F.E.C~ right-of-way along U.S. Highway
$1 between NE 15th Avenue and NE 22nd Avenue (approximately
2,500 feet). This would allow the City to eventually remove
the unsightly exotic hedge, eliminate the hedge maintenance
and the mature Red Cedar trees will screen the trains and
tracks in the planted area.
