BOYNTON BEACH CITY LIBRARY MONTHLY REPORT NOVEMBER 2021 Administrative Services/Public Relations Library Director attended City Commission meetings, FIU Racial and Social Equity Community Assessment Public Input Meeting, SEFLIN Managers Academy Steering Committee Meeting, Leadership Administrative Team Meeting, Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County Love of Literacy Luncheon, and the Schoolhouse Museum Board Meeting. The library was featured in the news twice this month. One was a Boca Beat roundup in the Boca Raton Tribune for local events, and the other was a feature in the Palm Beach Post for unique classes and services available at local libraries. We also attended the FAU Tech Runway Open House event on November 10 at City Hall, where we shared information about the library and Creative Edge Studio with local entrepreneurs and business owners. The Friends of the Boynton Beach City Library had 39 volunteer hours in October. Access to our collections continues to increase; this month, we added 134 photos to the online Omeka image collection management system (available for viewing at https://boyntonbeachhistory.omeka.net/). We also have new displays in the library: Fishing is great in Boynton Beach and History of City Hall, spotlighting Boynton Beach's maritime culture and documenting the changes in our center of local governance. She no longer has a microwave or other items. She has been at the last two Crafts and Coffee programs, she loves coming out and making new things with us that she would not be able to make in her new home. In every Card Crafting Club Program, we learn something new from our patrons, and they learn something new from each other. We hoped to cultivate a community of Makers with these programs, and it looks like we are on the right track. The library and Creative Edge Studio were invited to attend the Tech Runway Open House. We had a table in the northeast corner. I brought down the 3D printer and Cricut machines. We connected with a lot of people that night, which resulted in two new appointments this month. I just had a new patron come to the library, she is a non-resident and wanted to pay for the non-resident card because she feels access to the Studio is well worth it. She has a Cricut at home, and wanted to use our Mug Press to make a special mug for her father. Rebecca and I recently attended the Maker Faire Orlando. This was a helpful experience to find out what other Makerspaces are doing and what other Makers are doing in their areas. We saw a lot of 3D Printers, which has inspired us to find more ways to utilize and showcase our 3D printer. We got see what other Makers are doing, which gave us ideas on how we can support Makers in our community. We also took advantage of this time to attend two Makerspaces in the Orlando area. The Melrose Center of Orange County Public Library was incredible and truly inspiring. They offer so much, and meet the needs of their community on a different level. They have turned to virtual instruction. They offer virtual instruction on game development software and Adobe software and much more. They have a sewing program, which is very popular. This gave us ideas on different sewing projects we can bring here and what groups of people we can reach out to. We also got great ideas from learning about their policies and guidelines. We also visited the Hive, which is a Makerspace inside the Orlando Science Center. This space was a lot more child-oriented, but we gained great ideas for programs and ways to set up a mobile hot glue gun station. They do a November 2021 Monthly Report I Page 4 program with 3D printers, where everyone gets a laptop and creates something. This is another potential idea for future programming. Though we had a week off for the Thanksgiving Holiday, it was a very busy month for the homework help center. I continue to appreciate the AmeriCorps tutors who help me along the way. We have seven tutors that come on different days of the week and offer their support. They are really getting to know my students and it's awesome to watch their relationships grow. This month has been very busy. We continue to average about 15-17 students a day but have even had days reach 20 sessions or more! This is perfect as we usually have myself + 2 extra tutors. We will each do about 7 sessions during the afternoon. The November statistics for kids were as follows: In regards to students K-6, I had 79 different students! Most of these students are regulars with a few new faces! This month we had 8 new students and 71 returning students! The new students varied in age with 30 VPK (Preschool), 0 kindergartener, 0 first graders, 2 second graders, 1 third grader, 3 fourth graders, and 2 fifth graders and 0 sixth graders. Between myself and the extra helpers, we had about 112 children sessions from 30 minutes — 1 hour and did just over 75 hours of instruction for the month of November. Please keep in mind I am counting each student a separate session even if I was working with multiple students at a time. This is important for interpreting my data. I am very satisfied with these numbers considering we were out for a week and things did slow down a bit with the holiday. While I still mostly am getting children learners, I also had a few teenagers (7-12 grade) and hope to continue building with this age group. In November, I had 13 teenagers, all from Southtech Prep and daughters of Zion, and Atlantic. I had 3 new teenagers this month, including 1 seventh grader, 1 eighth grader and 1 twelfth grader. The center did a total of 32 teenage sessions for a total of 17 hours of instruction. All together kids and teens combined we served 92 students in sessions for a total of about 92 hours of instruction in the month of November. Year to date, we have served 105 November 2021 Monthly Report I Page 7 students in about 669 sessions and had about 390 hours of instruction. I am so thrilled with these numbers and hope they continue as the year progresses. We passed the 100-student mark before Christmas break. Last year we barely hit 100 students total. It is also worth noting I have been doing a few adult sessions in the morning. I have served 4 different adult students helping with GED study and resume help. I also have begun helping several students with SAT/ACT help as needed. I also have gotten a lot of interest for ESL help, and while I am not currently able to provide it, I am compiling a list of learner information for future use. So far this service year has been going great. We are extremely busy but in the best way. I can't wait to see how we continue to grow as the service year progresses. Additionally, the library staff gathered for our annual holiday staff training, which included a guest speaker who challenged us to examine the library's values and envision what the future of the library could be. The library was featured in the Boca Beat roundup in the Boca Raton Tribune for local December events. Our staff also participated in two outreach events. The first was the City of Boynton Beach's Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 3, 2021. The second was a special gathering arranged by Marcia Levine of the Library Advisory Board, where around 30 local women visited the Library for a tour and presentation on our services given by librarian Joyce Pernicone. The Friends of the Boynton Beach City Library had 30 volunteer hours in December. Customer Relations Outreach Program Library Customer Relations staff are looking to innovate the manner in which we introduce customers to the vast number of quality circulating materials. Access to collections is provided through online finding aids, online local newspapers, and an increasing number of individual photos available online. Our outreach activities include Georgen Charnes, the archivist, writing a column for the local historical society, social media posts through the library, and exhibits. Donations regularly arrive. Rebecca, our part-time Creative Edge Studio staff member, had to cover Studio appointments and handle three programs without me. She did an amazing job taking charge and keeping everything moving while I recovered. She also stated that by being alone, this required her to learn more on the Cricut machine, used in the card crafting club, and she now feels much more comfortable with that machine. She also made more items for the Friends of the Library Bookstore, keeping up with those items. (Wooden bookmarks from the Glowforge, Greeting cards from the Cricut). A new user heard about the Studio and came in to customize mugs. We used the sublimation printer and mug press. These mugs are prizes for a special event they are involved in. Please keep in mind I am counting each student as a separate session even if I was working with multiple students at a time. This is important for interpreting my data. I am very pleased with these numbers! I believe things are only going to get busier as the New Year blooms! While I still mostly am getting children learners, I also had a few teenagers (7-12 grade) and hope to continue building with this age group. In December, I had 14 teenagers, all from Southtech Prep and daughters of Zion, and Atlantic. I had 1 new teenager, a 7th grader. The center did a total of 14 teenage sessions for a total of 19 hours of instruction. All together kids and teens combined we served 75 students in sessions for a total of about 87 hours of instruction in the month of December. Year to date, we have served 112 students in about 786 sessions and had about 477 hours of instruction. I am so thrilled with these numbers and hope they continue as the year progresses. It is also worth noting I have been doing a few adult sessions in the morning. I have served 4 different adult students helping with GED study and resume help, as well as proofreading and college writing help. Amanda, the new adult ESL AmeriCorps member will be starting in January, and I am so excited for this next step. I am prepared to help her with whatever she needs, and I already have a list of ESL learners ready for her. I look forward to also working with the students of her clients when I can, and I love being able to help out with those in the ESL sessions. So far this service year has been a dream. I have so many students and parents that are seeing a difference in their kids. I am so happy to not only be able to provide homework help for them, but also just being a friend and role model for my kids. I adore them and this position.
