(Corporate Seal) DIRECTOR OF ENGINRERING AND PUBLIC WORKS NATURE OF WORE This is professional engineering work of a difficult and highly responsible nature in directing the operation of Public Works and Engineering Departments of the City; performed under general direction; related work as required. Work involves the application of technical knowledge and skill to engineering problems and projects of a municipali- ty. Work is performed in accordance with policies of the City Manager, with wide latitude for independent decision and judgment as regards the technical aspects of Engineering and Public Works. Responsibilities include general supervi- sion of Streets, Animal Control, Sanitation, Vehicle Service Divisions as well as Engineering office drafting and field workers. , ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS (NOTE: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in this class. Designs and supervises the preparation of plans for con- struction of city storm water drainage, design and manage- ment. Directs the preparation of specifications for con- tracts to be let for street, and sidewalk design and mainte- nance, construction work and interprets contracts and specifications for contractors. Directs the supervision and inspection of all contract streets and public works projects within the city. Meets and confers with contractors, architects, engineers and others on engineering matte~s and answers citizen complaints and inquiries, prepares reports and feasibility studies on future public works projects. Attends City Commission meetings, and represents the City in dealing with other agencies with respect to engineering matters, ie., traffic. Makes inspections of proposed subdivisions; establishes departmental policy and attends to administrative detail. Prepares the annual budget and makes recommendations to the City Manager. Reviews and evaluates the work performance of the staff of Public Works and Engineering Departments and performs periodic review of the municipal infrastructure, construct- ed, operated and maintained by the Department, including equipment, streets, storm drainage and traffic.
