A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA,
REQUESTING THE SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY OF
PALM BEACH COUNTY TO RETAIN ITS
SELECTION OF THE WEST BOCA SITE NUMBER 1
AS A LANDFILL, TRANSFER STATION SITE
AND IF REQUIRED A FUTURE BURNING UNIT
AND FOR THE PALM BEACH COUNTY BOARD OF
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO SUPPORT THE
SELECTION OF THE SAME; AND, PROVIDING
FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF.
WHEREAS, the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County has
heretofore selected a parcel of land located in South Palm Beach
County to be used as a landfill, transfer station, and if required,
based upon need, a future burning unit; and
WHEREAS, The West Boca Site Number I was selected by the
Authority after obtaining all required and necessary expert opinions
and recommendations, and the use of same in the determination of said
site location; and, for which ~he Authority expended in excess of SIX
HUNDRED THOUSAND {$600,000.00) DOLLARS; and
WHEREAS, The County Commission has expended the sum of TWO
HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND {$250,000.00) DOLLARS of taxpayers' monies for
an additional review and report on the feasibility of a West site
location although the final decision rests with the Solid Waste
Authority; and
WHEREAS, 405,783 tons of solid waste, which is over 37% of
all Solid Waste in Palm Beach County, is generated by those areas
South of Forest Hill Boulevard and East of the Florida Turnpike; and
WHEREAS, 204,990 tons of solid waste, which is over 17% of
all solid waste in Palm Beach County, is generated by those areas from
2.4 miles north of Atlantic Avenue to the Southern Border of Palm
Beach County; and
WHEREAS, it is acknowledged that no community in Palm Beach
County is void of contributing to the solid waste disposal dilemma due
to its respective generation of the same; and,
WHEREAS, the City Commission is of the opinion that the site
selection process should be conducted in the business and not the
political arena.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COI4MIS$ION OF THE
CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The City Commission of the City of Boynton
Beach, hereby requests and urges the Solid Waste Authority of Palm
Beach County to retain its selection of the West Boca Site Number 1 as
a South County Landfill, Transfer Station site and if required, a
future buring unit.
Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Boynton Beach,
hereby requests and urges the Palm Beach County Board of County
Commissioners to support the Solid Waste Authority's selection of the
West Boca Site Number I as a South County Landfill, Transfer Station
site and if required, a future burning unit.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to deliver certified
copies of this Resolution to members of the Solid Waste Authority of
Palm Beach County and all members of the Palm Beach County Board of
County Commissioners, together with all elected officials of other
County municipalities and the Board of Directors of the Palm Beach
County Municipal League.
Section 4. This Resolution shall be effective upon date of
passage.
