A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING
PURCHASE OF MANGROVES WITHIN THE
MUNICIPALITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, AS
IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH
COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT PLAN.
WHEREAS, mangrove trees uniquely thrive in briny wetlands,
where detritus formed around their root systems creates a food supply
that initiates a "chain of life" critical to marine creatures of
shores and oceans; and
WHEREAS, mangroves therefore are deemed ecologically valuable
by governments and environmentalists, and are protected against damage
and destruction by local, regional, state and federal laws; and
WHEREAS, approximately 21 acres of productive mangroves are
being damaged and destroyed by the wake of boats along the
Intracoastal Waterway, within Palm Beach County, in the downtown
Central Business District of Boynton Beach municipality; and
WHEREAS, this environmentally-threatening boat wake is pre-
dicted to increase at the imminent opening of a new marina adjacent to
the mangrove stand; and
WHEREAS, a plan to protect these mangroves, by creating a
nature-study center/public open space/park of the acreage, has been
designed in the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Plan and is sup-
ported by officials of the municipality of Boynton Beach, the School
Board of Palm Beach County, the Conservation Committee of the Palm
Beach Chapter of. Audubon Society of the Everglades, Departments of
Natural Resources and Environmental Regulations of State of Florida,
the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation, and other regulatory
agencies, organizations, and interested citizens; and
WHEREAS, this plan will benefit current and future residents
of the County, the State and the Nation, by protecting a vital natural
resource that helps populate our waters, and by providing an educa-
tional tool for public understanding and appreciation for our environ-
ment; and
WHEREAS, funds are being included in the Florida Department
of Natural Resources Budget of 1989/90.
NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA, THAT:
Section 1: The City supports the projected downtown Boynton
Beach mangrove nature-study center/public open space/park, as pro-
posed by the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Plan, and the
municipality's Comprehensive Plan, both approved by the Boynton Beach
City Commission.
Section 2: The City urges the acquisition of the Mangrove
Nature Center/Park Project proposed by the Community Redevelopment
Plan of Boynton Beach, and to expedite, in all possible ways, site
acquisition funding for this project.
